Release Notes

• A daily note, one per day. Turn on Daily note in Settings › General and Smolpad keeps one note per calendar day in a Daily folder, named by its date in the format you pick from eight. On the Mac, Settings › General gains Set keyboard shortcut to open today's note: press it anywhere and today's note comes to the front, created if need be, with the cursor waiting under the heading. Daily notes count toward the free tier's ten notes like any other note.
• A calendar for daily notes. With Daily note on, the note list gets a calendar button. Days that have a note carry a dot, today sits on a tinted disc, and tapping any day opens its note, past or future, creating it if there is none.
• Add to Today's Note from any app on the Mac. Select text anywhere, right-click or open the app's Services menu, and choose Add to Today's Note in Smolpad. The text lands under today's heading and the menu bar icon shows a checkmark for a second. Give it a shortcut of your own in System Settings › Keyboard › Keyboard Shortcuts › Services.
• Smolpad can offer what you just copied. Turn on Enable clipboard notification in Settings › Editor › Customize Editor, and opening Smolpad with new text or a picture on the clipboard shows a small card asking Paste clipboard? New Note puts it in a new note; while your cursor is in a note, Yes pastes it right there. The card leaves on its own after 20 seconds, and the same clipboard is never offered twice. On the Mac, Settings › General › Notes has Always paste clipboard into a new note, for skipping the question.
• Save the clipboard from the Home Screen. On iPhone and iPad, press and hold the Smolpad icon and choose Save Clipboard: whatever you copied, text or a picture, becomes a new note and Smolpad opens on it.
• Import a folder of notes. Settings › Storage › Import Notes has an Import notes button: pick a folder and Smolpad copies the Markdown and text files at its top level into your notes, asking first. The originals stay where they are, and the pane says how many notes came over.
• Settings › Storage says what iCloud is doing. A line under the storage cards says whether iCloud is on and every note is synced, whether notes are uploading or downloading, or, in amber, that notes are staying on this device and what to turn on. The same line on Mac, iPhone, and iPad.
• Tab nests a list item. On a bullet, numbered, or task line, Tab indents the item one level and Shift-Tab brings it back out, so a sub-item is Return, Tab, type. Numbered lists renumber to match, and it works on a selection of several lines. On iPhone and iPad this is for hardware keyboards.
• Paste a link onto selected text on the Mac. Select some words, copy a web address, and press Command-V: the words become a link to it. iPhone and iPad already worked this way.
• Two new editor themes, Doki Sayori and Doki Vanilla. Sayori is light, pale sky blue with a deep teal cursor; Vanilla is dark, slate violet with an ice blue cursor. Twenty-nine themes in all.
• Always on top for the torn-off window, three ways on the Mac: a switch in Settings › Editor › Customize Editor, the note list's right-click menu, or the pin at the end of the window's status bar. Smolpad remembers the choice.
• The torn-off window remembers its own size, and the popup and the window each have their own list width, so the window can run Wide while the popup stays Compact. If you would rather the panel match the window, Settings › General › Popup has a switch for that.
• The popup appears instantly on the Mac. Click the icon and it is there. Settings › General › Popup has Animate popup, off by default, for anyone who wants the old motion back.
• Settings are grouped under headings: Launch Configuration, Popup, and Notes in General; Import Notes in Storage; Customize Editor in Editor.
• The Settings and Search buttons float over the note list, and the list scrolls beneath them, the notes fading as they pass under the search row.
• New smol features. About shows the build number next to the version, lists its links one per row on iPhone and iPad, and has a Release Notes link that opens this page. The shortcut row in Settings › General shows the shortcut you recorded as a keycap. The heading button in the San Francisco icon set shows an H, matching the Chonk set.
• Fixes. The Mac joins iCloud without a relaunch: turn on iCloud Drive or sign in while Smolpad is open and your notes copy over right away, and if iCloud Drive is slow to answer at launch, Smolpad asks again on its own. A note whose picture file has been moved or deleted shows a small frame with the file's name instead of a blank line. Opening Smolpad with a file copied in Finder no longer reads the file: the clipboard card judges it by its name and reads it only when you accept, so a cloud folder's permission dialog appears when you paste, not when Smolpad opens. And on iPhone, the gray band that showed under the Settings and Search row is gone.

• Pictures in your notes. Drag or paste an image into a note and it appears in the text at its own size. Smolpad copies the file so the note keeps working when the original moves: beside the note, or into an images folder, your choice in Settings › Editor. Drag a corner to resize it. Pictures travel with their notes on iCloud and on Dropbox.
• An image button in the formatting bar, next to the link button. On iPhone and iPad it asks Photos or Files. On the Mac, Shift-Command-V does the same thing. When the editor is too narrow for the whole row, the buttons that do not fit move into a More menu.
• A picture has its own menu. Right-click on the Mac, press and hold on iPhone and iPad: resize to a width or back to its original size, Show in Finder or Show in Files, and Delete, which asks first and removes the file too unless another note still uses it.
• Edit a link you cannot see. With Reveal syntax under the cursor turned off, select a link and press Command-L or tap the link button. A small card opens with the link's text and its address, both editable, plus Remove Link.
• Tap the title to rename a note on iPhone and iPad. A small panel opens with the name ready to edit, and the name stays put afterward instead of following the note's first line.
• Option-Command-S inserts a separator, the line that divides one part of a note from the next.
• Show in Finder, from a note's right-click menu on the Mac. On iPhone and iPad it reads Show in Files, for notes in iCloud or in Smolpad's own folder, which the Files app now lists under On My iPhone.
• A New Note button in the Mac panel's header, for anyone who turns the editor's floating one off. One of the two is always there.
• Your first week of Smolpad Pro Yearly is free. Cancel any time before it ends.
• The panel opens ready to read, not ready to type. No cursor lands in the note until you click into it, and switching notes lets the cursor go. A note you just created is the exception: it opens with the cursor on its first line, keyboard up on iPhone and iPad.
• The Dock icon follows the tear-off on the Mac. Drag the panel into its own window and Smolpad appears in the Dock and in Command-Tab; close the window and it goes back to the menu bar. With Menu Bar & Dock set, the icon stays put as it always has.
• Smolpad may ask you to rate it, at most three times a year and only after you have written on three separate days. There is a Rate Smolpad link in About whenever you want it.
• Fixes. Editing a note's title no longer takes the cursor away on the Mac or the keyboard down on iPhone and iPad. A tag can start with an accented letter, so #Übersetzung and #élan are tags now. A fresh install remembers your purchase, and trying a TestFlight beta no longer unsets Pro in the App Store app. The Mac toolbar's image button works, the outline pane paints to the bottom with the keyboard up, hiding Markdown hides a picture's code too, and on iOS 27 typing near autocorrect no longer flashes the cursor to the wrong line.

• Thirteen new editor themes. Solarized, GitHub and Everforest arrive in light and dark pairs, GitHub brings its High Contrast pair too, and Dracula brings along Alucard, its official light half. Afterglow, Nord and the minty Bearded Milkshake Mint round out the set. Twenty-seven themes in all.
• Five new app icons: Smol Skeuomorphic, Smol Coast, Smol Notebook, Smol Sketches and Smol Pixels.
• An outline of your note, beside it. Turn it on from the editor's toolbar, or with Option-Command-O on the Mac, and every heading in the note lists down the side. Click one to jump to that section. On iPhone the same button opens the list as a sheet.
• Open Markdown files with Smolpad. Drop a .md on the Dock icon, use Open With, or drag files onto the note list. Your originals are never touched or moved, and the copy keeps the name and dates it arrived with. Smolpad reads .txt files as notes too.
• Reorder and file notes by hand on iPhone and iPad. Press and hold a row anywhere outside its title, then drag: the rows part to show where the note will land. Keep going past a folder's name and the note files itself there, right where you dropped it.
• More keyboard shortcuts. Command-1 to Command-9 jump to a note by its place in the list, Command-K goes to search, Command-L inserts a link, Command-W puts Smolpad away without quitting it, and Command-/ opens a card listing every shortcut there is.
• Markdown syntax can stay hidden for good. Settings has a new switch under Hide Markdown syntax. Leave Reveal syntax under the cursor on and the markers come back for whatever you are editing; turn it off and they never appear at all, which is what a few of you asked for.
• A wider note list on the Mac. Compact, Standard, Wide and Extra Wide, so long note names stop truncating. Right-click the list to change the width without opening Settings, or to reset an oversized panel.
• The panel has a close button. In its top left corner, the same button the torn-off window has. It takes the place of the quit button, which is off by default now: quitting is a right-click on the menu bar icon.
• New smol features. New Macs show Smolpad in the Dock as well as the menu bar. Settings › Sync is now Settings › Storage, and it can open your notes folder in the Finder or the Files app. Reduce Motion is respected everywhere. The app icon picker is a grid on iPhone too.
• Fixes. A deleted welcome note stays deleted, and the folder Smolpad makes on first launch cleans up after itself. Hide Markdown syntax now hides it while you type, and opening a note no longer flashes its first heading. The Mac panel can no longer be dragged too small to use. On the macOS 27 beta, tearing the panel off works again and the delete and rename dialogs take clicks.

• Tags. Type #ideas in any note and it becomes a chip you can tap. Browse every tag from the tag button, filter the list down to one, and autocomplete offers tags you have already used. They are just text in your files: nothing hidden, nothing extra to manage.
• Word and character counts. In the status bar on the Mac; on iPhone and iPad, a floating pill that takes your theme's colors and rides above the keyboard while you type. Each count has its own switch in Settings.
• German and French. The whole app, translated by people who actually use it.
• Pick your icon set. Chonk, the hand-drawn original, or San Francisco, Apple's own symbols. Switches instantly.
• Two new app icons: Smolpad Lemon and Smolpad Travelers.
• Search, your way. It collapses to a circle in the corner until you need it, or you can adjust a setting to have it always open.
• Pinned notes reorder. Drag pinned notes into your own arrangement without switching the whole list to Manual sort.
• iPad Settings updated. Settings opens as a sheet, the sidebar buttons are easier to hit, and the new-note button sits in the editor where you need it.
• Fixes. Dragging notes to reorder them works again on the Mac (broken since 1.3.2, and rebuilt from scratch underneath). The macOS 27 beta panel loses a stray transparent strip and its reappearing window buttons. A cancelled subscription returns to the free tier promptly. Restore Purchases says the App Store could not be reached instead of claiming you never bought anything. On the free tier, deleting a note brings back your oldest hidden note rather than offering a slot that would swallow the next note you write. Settings page titles also have new translations.

• Share to Smolpad. On iPhone and iPad, clip any page straight from the share sheet: the link lands in the note you choose, and if you had text selected, it comes along too. Three clip styles (formatted quote, plain text, or a bullet), and Smolpad remembers which note and style you used last.
• Smarter names for clipped links. A note that starts with a bare URL gets named after the page, not the address.
• Ready for the macOS 27 beta. Apple's next macOS changes how menu bar panels behave, and it broke typing, Return, and window dragging for menu bar apps across the platform. Smolpad's panel is rebuilt to work on the beta, a month before the rest of the Mac catches up.
• Font size, properly. A real slider instead of three fixed steps, a typeable point value, an option to match the system text size, and on iPhone and iPad, pinch the editor to resize.
• OpenDyslexic joins the editor font choices.
• Font previews on iOS. The font pickers now show every choice in its own face.
• Small things. Pinned notes wear your theme's accent, swiping a note all the way now completes the action on both sides, the Mac panel opens with the sidebar showing, and a Send Feedback link lives in Settings.

Hello! Smolpad's first release. Smol Markdown notes on Mac, iPhone, and iPad:

• Plain .md files in your own iCloud Drive: no database, no lock-in, yours whether or not you keep using Smolpad.
• A menu bar home on the Mac. Click the icon, write the thought down, get back to work. Tear the panel off when you want it to stay.
• An editor that stays out of your way, with live Markdown, tappable task lists, and folders that are real folders on disk.
• Fourteen themes, a shelf of app icons, and a free tier with every editing feature included.
